Tamron announced their first lens for the Sony NEX system. This is the first third party lens that will support autofocus and autoaperture on the NEX body. The lens is the 18-200mm Di III VC E-mount lens with maximum apertures at f/3.5 @18mm and f/6.3 @200mm. The lens is in direct competition with the Sony 18-200mm OSS lens. Let's compare the specs of the new Tamron E-mount zoom lens vs the Sony's super zoom lens.

  3. I went and calculated it out to USD, adjusted for market price inflation. I used the USD/American prices as the base by which to calculate inflations over the retail price. I used Amazon's international site to source all prices; as the Tamron 18-200 is only available in Japan as of now, I used the Sony version's regional prices as a comparable base by which to calculate the price of the Tamron.

    The Sony 18-200mm is going for 73,200 Yen.
    The Tamron 18-200 is going for 62,820 Yen.

    73,200 Yen is ~940 USD, which is $140 above retail, or 15% inflation.
    62,820 Yen is ~810 USD, minus 15% for inflation equals ~$685 USD.

    So, we're probably looking at a retail price in America for the Tamron lens somewhere between $650 and $700 USD, a significant savings over the Sony lens. As for Europe, it depends heavily on the specific country AND the current fluctuations in the Euro, but I can give a rough estimate on the same general economic principals as I used above.

    Using the German Amazon site, considering the strength of their economy;

    The Sony 18-200 lens is going for ~696 EUR in Germany.
    696 EUR in USD is ~910 USD, a $114 USD increase, or, ~12% inflation.
    This gives us inflation differential of ~3% between Germany and Japan.

    The Tamron 18-200 is going for 62,820 Yen.
    62,820 Yen equals ~620 EUR, minus 3% for inflation equals ~601 EUR

    So we're probably looking at a retail price for the Tamron in Europe at somewhere between 600 and 650 Euros. Granted, these are all ballpark estimates. However, the estimates here will be somewhat within the actual price range. I have much more confidence in my USD estimate than my EUR one, though. As always; plan high and hope low. I hope this information has been helpful to some of you.

  4. well with the speed of a/f i found manual canon fd lens and adapter to be easier to maintain composition, although night shots are tricky. i use standard 18-55 zoom lens stock sony product that supports cameras lens interface on the body.
